Vol. 88, No. 24

INTER-CLUBS COMPLETED
Inter-club
Chairman Hugh Winnell says his "job" is getting easier
and easier - here we're
only half-way through the month of March
and both of our inter-club visits have been completed. On March
3rd
Hugh was joined by Marion Kuebler and Bob
Esford for a visit
to the Kiwanis Club of Harbor Springs, completing the first of our
required two.
Last Tuesday, March 9th , D. J., Jordan Dutcher, and
Ken Winter visited the Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix to complete
the second visit for the month.
Two members are already on the
"list" for next month's Spring Divisional in Gaylord, so we're
nearly half-way
to having April's "in the bag".
SPRING
DIVISIONAL MEETING
The 2010 edition of the Division 22 Spring Divisional will take
place on Saturday,
April 17, 2010, in the Eagles Lodge in Gaylord.
One significant change will be that this will
be a LUNCHEON
MEETING. Registration and Social Hour will be from 11:00 to
11:50 a.m. followed by the Division
Caucus from 11:50 to Noon.
The election of a Lt. Governor, Lt. Governor-Elect, and a new
Trustee of the Kiwanis
of Michigan Foundation will take place
during this caucus. Lunch will feature Roast Beef, Oven Roast
Chicken,
mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans almondine, salad
and dressing, rolls, butter, and beverage - all for $18.00
per person.
Reservations must be turned in no later than April 13th. Our Board
has agreed to pick-up-the-tab
for members attending. This is the
Official Visit of District Governor Joan Van-Arsdalen and her
entourage
of District Officers and Committee Chairs to our
Division.
MORE PROGRAM SUGGESTIONS
In addition to Past President Cameron
offers of a couple of ideas
for those who might be "struggling" to arrange a program/speaker:
the Robert Emmet Society provides an annual scholarship to
Ireland - you can contact George Colburn at N.C.M.C.
the North Central Michigan College Foundation is also inter-
ested in providing an update on what's new - contact person
is
Sean Pollian at the college.
Hugh Winnell suggested contacting Mr. Ken Stolpmann,
a native
of New Zealand for a program. Ken can be contacted at 487-1448.
MEMBERSHIP FOLLOW-UPS
Membership Growth Chair Marion Kuebler
urges each member
who brought a guest to our Bring-A-Guest luncheon to follow-up
by making sure that these individuals
have all their questions about
Kiwanis answered. Try inviting them to another meeting - the
meal price will
be $11.50. Early reports indicate that we will be
electing at least three of the ten as New Members. The
only way
to be sure if someone will join your club is - ASK 'EM!
KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP
The 2010 Kiwanis Scholarship Committee
will be spearheaded by
Julie Witthoeft. The groundwork is already underway which will
get applications in the hands of high school seniors. Completed
applications will be due by mid April after which
time, an inter-
view committee will meet with the candidates to determine the
winner(s). At this point, we
are planning at least one scholarship
of $1,000.
THIS
WEEK - Mar 16, 2010
Rick Neumann will be our Program Chairman for this week's
meeting. Our program will feature representative(s) from the High
School Band Boosters, speaking about the current
project of
replacing the band uniforms worn by the Marching Northmen.
NEXT WEEK - Mar 23rd
Ken Winter will be Program Chairman
for today's meeting. Our
guest speaker will be Mr. Rick Diebold, Interim Superintendent of
the Char-Em Intermediate
School District. With the cost of
Education being at the forefront of everyone's mind, we'll get an
update
on how our district is fairing. (See related para for
location.)
LAST WEEK
Our thanks to "Prospective Member" Hank Hoffman for the inter-
esting program at last week's meeting. Hank is a consultant for
Wolverine Power and gave us the low-down on a
new coal-fired
plant being planned in Rogers City. He also spoke about the need
to improve the transmission
system in northern Michigan as well
as he rest of the country. Our thanks also to Hugh Winnell
for
arranging the program.
FLAG
PROJECT
We may be depending on our newest fund raiser more that we'd
first planned. Jordan Dutcher has announced the following sche-
dule for this year's
Flag Project:
Materials are being ordered to handle 150 residences with
a beginning date
of Memorial Day - May 31st.
Kiwanis volunteers will go door-to-door starting the week-
end
of March 27th to invite homeowners to participate. Initially,
the homes on Bay, Lake, Mitchell, Michigan, and State
Streets east
of Howard will be contacted along with Howard, south of Grove
St.
As
soon as materials arrive (or picked up), a group of vol-
unteers will be needed to measurer and cut the PVC that will
be put
in the ground, and prepare the conduit for mounting the flags.
A sign-up sheet will be circulated which will
also announce the
times and places for workbees.
SPECIAL
MEETING LOCATION
Our regular meeting for Tuesday, March 23rd will be held in the
dining room of Independence
Village. We'll need to know how
many Kiwanians will be attending this Special Meeting so a sign-
up sheet
will be circulated at this week's (3/16) meeting. Meeting
time (12:10 p.m.) remains the same. President-Elect
Jim Ehrnst is
handling the arrangements for the meeting. Your Board of Direc-
tors
authorized the change in location as a salute to Past President
Oliver Aho, our longest-serving
Kiwanian.
