Vol. 87, No. 7

THIS WEEK -- November 25, 2008
Vice Pres. Diane Reis is the Program Chair for today's meeting,
however, she is in
Colorado for Thanksgiving. Our speaker will
be Maurika Reed from Hospice of Little Traverse Bay with
information
on the hospice program.
NEXT WEEK December
2nd
Rick Neumann will be Program Chairman for this week's meeting.
Our guest speaker will be Mr. Ron Fowler, Children's Librarian at
the Petoskey Public Library. Ron will update
us on various pro-
grams at our local library.
LAST
WEEK
Our thanks to Dr. Jane Millar, Exec. Dir. of Northern Community
Mediation, for the program at
last week's meeting. Jane presented
the video she uses in the Juvenile Shoplifting program which was
developed
using a grant from our Kiwanis club. Our thanks also
to Jill Ryan for arranging the
program.
NO SIGN-UP NECESSARY
Inter-club
Chairman Hugh Winnell didn't wait for Tuesday to
arrive to clean up the snafu of missing
an inter-club. Along with
Jan and Ray Jensen, Huey
arranged a visit to the Kiwanis Club of
Indian River on Monday last week. This visit takes care of the
November
visits and we look forward to December. The two visits
for December will feature a visit to Charlevoix on Dec.
2nd (Ray &
Jan Jensen and Marv Howell)
and a visit to St. Ignace on the 3rd
(President Cameron, Ken Winter,
and Diane Reis).
"SMOKE-OUT"
STILL POSSIBLE
It's beginning to look a lot ... like we WILL have a Smoke-Out
on
Friday, December 5th in conjunction with the Christmas Open
House. Joe Daly
and Rick Neumann have stepped up to offer their
help in getting things lined up. One
BIG help would be someone
with either a trailer or a pick-up to assist with getting tables, grills,
and the tent from the First Christian Church to our site adjacent to
J.C. Penney's (and back!). If You
can fill this assignment, please
all Rick (347-0931) so that final arrangements can be made.
We'll
also need a sign-up sheet...

FIRST
GIVING PROJECT - BOOST
Following up on suggestions at this month's Board Meeting, Pres-
ident-Elect Ryan Bentley is putting together a news release which
will hopefully give a BOOST to our newest
Fund Raiser. Through
this project, we had hoped to raise enough money to fund the
annual scholarships we award
to graduating high school seniors.
This news release will explain how our project works and Ryan
will list names and phone numbers or e-mail addresses of our
members who are participating in the project. YOU
will, however,
have to call Ryan (439-9342) to have your information listed in the
article.
This will be beneficial to those who are seeking pledges,
etc. by gathering names and, for those who are uncomfortable
in
e-mailing.
ONE FOR THE SEASON
When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please
include the following:
A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20307-5001
You might also - make a donation to the Thomas P. Oliver Holiday
Gift Program of your
Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation and wish
Season's Greetings to your Kiwanis friends through the
MICHIGAN
BUILDER. Ask Dave for details...
A "REQUESTED" ANNOUNCEMENT
A new support group for custodial grandparents
has been formed.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren meets on the fourth Mon-
day of each month (January
through November) from 6:30 to 8:00
p.m. at the Petoskey Friendship Center. On-site child care is avail-
able
during the meeting by appointment. For more information,
please contact support group coordinator Sue Ann Bouwense
at
(231) 347-3211 or (888) 347-0369, x 24.
WHAT'S
INVOLVED?
As we near that month of unending projects, here is what's
involved: for the Shopping
Spree, we have twelve members lined
up to meet at the Retail Entrance of Wal-Mart at 7:30 a.m. on Sat-
urday, Dec. 6th. Each will be assigned a child whom they will
assist with selecting gifts for siblings, parents,
etc. Gift wrapping
materials will be supplied for us to help wrap the purchased items.
Participants will
be picked up around 11 o'clock. Blood Drive and
Bell Ringing,
are pretty much self-explanatory. More help is
always appreciated. Adopt-A-Family,
select item(s) from the fam-
ily's "wish list", bring it to our meeting on December 16th for
wrapping
(materials furnished), and tag it appropriately. We'll
deliver them to the Women's Resource Center.
We undertake this
project in lieu of "another big meal during the holidays"! Christ-
mas
Lights Tour, starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Friendship Center, ser-
ving a light buffet dinner and joining
with the senior segment of
our community, followed by a "guided" (possibly mis-guided!)
tour of the Christmas
Lights & Decorations of our community.
For many, this is the only opportunity they have to view these
lights.
Let's get ALL of our members involved in one or more of
these activities.
