KIWANIS AT A GLANCE
The Mission of Kiwanis is "to serve children of the world". This is accomplished with a Membership of 586,000 adult and youth members (261k adult/325k youth). These members make up a total of 16,400 clubs in 80 countries or geographic locations around the world. They are served by a professional staff of 122, from the Kiwanis International headquarters located in Indianapolis, IN. Each year, Kiwanis clubs sponsor nearly 150,000 service projects; raise more than $107 million (US); and, devote more than 6 million hours to service. Kiwanis was founded in 1915, right here in Michigan (Detroit). This is your organization and you can rightly take pride in our accomplishments.
SCHEDULE FOR PROGRAM CHAIRS
A new schedule for weekly program chairs will be coming out very shortly. In previous years, the overall Program Chair (President-Elect) has usually just gone down the membership list (or some-times in reverse order) and assigned individuals to the Tuesdays of the fiscal year. President-Elect Designate Marion Kuebler has announced that she intends to give individual members more leeway in the process. Beginning this coming week (8/10) she will have a sign-up sheet circulating at our meetings for you to select one or more dates on which you'd like to arrange a speaker. With only thirty-two members to work with (currently), don't be afraid to sign up for more than one week. The completed list will be posted to our web-site and published with an issue of News & Views that is mailed to our non-computerized members. Next year's Bulletin Editor will probably like to know details a couple of weeks in advance - like I've tried to do.
NEW COMMITTEE CHAIRS
The Chairman of two of our most important committees (Youth Services & the Flag Project), Jordan Dutcher, is taking a Leave of Absence from the club while he attends Barber College. Stepping up to handle the duties of coordinating these committees are: Dave Farley, interim Youth Services Chairman; and, Pat McGinn and Hank Hoffman, co-chairs of the Flag Committee. Let's give these individuals (and their respective committees) the help they deserve and need. Our club also should show our thanks that they have stepped forward to take on these roles.
On the same topic, President Designate Jim Ehrnst is diligently working on Committee Appointments for the 2010-11 Kiwanis year. These appointments ideally will be completed by the end of August to allow time for proper training before the year begins on October 1.
TABLOID UP-DATE
Jan and Dave (Jensen & Meyer - not the Jan and Dean of musical fame) have determined that we have forty of the ONE HUNDRED ads needed to fill this year's Travel & Adventure Series Tabloid! Our stellar Layout Committee is anxious to get busy with the completion of this year's copy. The deadline is fast approaching. If you've agreed to make some calls, please get them made and get ad copy turned in to Jan or Dave. You don't need more reminders about how important this fund raiser is to our club/community! It provides the bulk of funding for our service projects.
THIS WEEK - August 10, 2010
Rick Neumann is the Program Chairman for today's meeting and Cindy Holman has arranged a program featuring Jake Emling. Jake is the Manager of Prescription Services, Inc a retail pharmacy owned by NMRHS.
NEXT WEEK - Aug 17th
Before she left on vacation, Cameron Brunet-Koch arranged to have Sean Pollion, Director of the NCMC Foundation, as our speaker for this week. President-Elect Designate Marion has graciously agreed to introduce him.
LAST WEEK
Our thanks to C.W. "Bill" Meyer, Chairman of the Emmet County Young Eagles, for the interesting and informative program at last week's meeting. He presented a short video on the Young Eagles program and related his own experiences with both the Y.E. and as a private pilot.
POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND TRADITIONS
Ed. Note: the following in no way is to be considered the total list of policies, procedures and traditions of the Kiwanis Club of Petoskey - its just a few that I feel are timely. The fiscal year for Kiwanis International is October 1st through September 30th. The term of office for Officers, Directors, and Committee Chairs begins on Oct. 1. In our club, and most of K.I., the election of a member to be Vice President usually means that about two years hence, that member will become President. When serving as Vice President of our club, the primary responsibility of the office is the planning and coordinating of the Officer's Installation Banquet. This can be a joint meeting (and at times has been with up to three clubs participating) with the Little Traverse Bay club (et al). The Installing Officer is typically the Lt. Governor of the Division, a past Lt. Gov., or a current or past District Officer. Contact needs to be established early as it is a first-come, first-served basis. The current President can assign additional tasks to the individual who is serving as V.P. In addition to taking the place of the President when necessary, the President-Elect (in our club) is also the over-all Program Chairperson of the club. For the first sixty-or-so years, this individual was responsible for 52 programs per year. This responsibility was modified some years ago (see related para.). The President-Elect has traditionally been the Chairman of Finance and Fund Raising (they figure out how to finance the programs they want to pursue during their year as President). The club's Budgets (Administrative & Service) should be developed with the input of other Officers, the Board, and Committee Chairs. These Budgets are to be adopted by the Board not later than October 15th each year. Guess we'll have to continue this in the future as I've about run out of room.
