Vol. 88, No. 45 August 17, 2010
THIS WEEK - August 17, 2010
Before she left on vacation, Cameron Brunet-Koch arranged to have Sean Pollion, Director of the NCMC Foundation, as our speaker for this week. President-Elect Designate Marion has graciously agreed to introduce him.
NEXT WEEK - Aug 24th
Ted Teller is scheduled to be Program Chairman for this week's meeting. However, Ted is working "out of the office" working on an audit and wasn't available. Watch next week's issue of News & Views for information on Ted's speaker and program.
AND THEN...
Our regular meeting for Tuesday, August 31st will be held in the Library/Conference Center on the campus of North Central Mich-igan College. Ken Winter will be Program Chairman and our program will feature Jack Harris and a special video presentation.
LAST WEEK
Our thanks to Mr. Jake Emling, Rph. for the interesting program at last week's meeting. Jake is the Manager of Prescription Serv-ices, Inc., a retail pharmacy owned by Northern Michigan Regional Health System, and he explained some of the inner-workings of his position and the compounding of medications which take place in this facility. Our thanks also to Cindy Holman for arranging the program which was introduced by Rick Neumann.
TRAVELOGUE TABLOID
We're down to the "wailing and gnashing" point on this year's Travelogue Tabloid. Advertising Chair Jan Jensen and Secretary Dave sat down this past week to determine the exact number of ads still required to fill this year's tab. Kudos to Hank Hoffman for securing several new ads. Hank says, "Plath's Meat is debating between a $75 or a $100 ad…Wes at Medicap Pharmacy wants a $200 ad…and Hoffman Engineering wants a $100 ad. The $100 ones are easy." Now, that's the attitude we need! Advertising information will be going to our "layout committee" shortly. There's still time, though, if you have advertisers yet to contact.
SCHEDULE FOR PROGRAM CHAIRS
A new schedule for weekly program chairs will be coming out very shortly. In previous years, the overall Program Chair (President-Elect) has usually just gone down the membership list (or some-times in reverse order) and assigned individuals to the Tuesdays of the fiscal year. President-Elect Designate Marion Kuebler has announced that she intends to give individual members more leeway in the process. Beginning this coming week (8/10) she will have a sign-up sheet circulating at our meetings for you to select one or more dates on which you'd like to arrange a speaker. With only thirty-two members to work with (currently), don't be afraid to sign up for more than one week. The completed list will be posted to our web-site and published with an issue of News & Views that is mailed to our non-computerized members. Next year's Bulletin Editor will probably like to know details a couple of weeks in advance - like I've tried to do. One purpose of this bulletin is to advertise upcoming programs. It is hoped that it will increase attendance at our meetings.
NEW COMMITTEE CHAIRS
The Chairman of two of our most important committees (Youth Services & the Flag Project), Jordan Dutcher, is taking a Leave of Absence from the club while he attends Barber College. Stepping up to handle the duties of coordinating these committees are: Dave Farley, interim Youth Services Chairman; and, Pat McGinn and Hank Hoffman, co-chairs of the Flag Committee. Let's give these individuals (and their respective committees) the help they deserve and need. Our club also should show our thanks that they have stepped forward to take on these roles.
On the same topic, President Designate Jim Ehrnst is diligently working on Committee Appointments for the 2010-11 Kiwanis year. These appointments ideally will be completed by the end of August to allow time for proper training before the year begins on October 1.
MORE POLICIES, PROCEDURES & TRADITIONS
I was interrupted (by space) last week as Budgets were being dis-cussed. The Service Committees Budget is developed by first determining how much money we can raise through the club's fund raising projects. These projects are currently - the Travel & Adventure Series (& primarily the tabloid), our Stars & Stripes Flag Project, and the 9-1-1 House Number Project. In addition, we normally realize a profit from the "Smoke Out" during the Christ-mas Open House which is earmarked for Community Service Committee projects. The "net profit" from these activities tells us what we can and cannot do to better our community. The motto of Kiwanis (International) is SERVING THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD, and therefore, the majority of our Service projects are devoted to YOUTH! Major expenditures include a generous do-nation to the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation (all of which is kept "local" due to the Foundation's project at Northern MI Hospital; the Dictionary Project, which donates a dictionary to every third grade student in Petoskey schools; sponsorship of Little League, our Christmas Shopping Spree, Camp Daggett, the "Y", and many more plus our Service Leadership organizations - the P.H.S. Key Club and the P.M.S. Builders Club. A Budget for the Administra-tive Fund relies heavily on the number of members in the club and who are regular in their attendance at club meetings. Meal (income & expense), Dues (in & out), and Happy dollar$ provide the funds for things we do involving the members of the club. This budget provides for the publication of this Bulletin (and the maintaining of the club's web-site), covers the expenses of training officers & committee chairs who attend conferences and conventions, processing fees for New Members, a mileage allowance for the Secretary, as well as other general expenses.
