THIS WEEK - July 20, 2010
DJ will be program chairman AND guest speaker/travelogue artist for today's meeting! DJ recently returned from a mission trip to Nicaragua and will tell us about his adventure.
NEXT WEEK - July 27th
Marion Kuebler will be Program Chair for this week's meeting. She has invited Izzy Lyman, Deputy Executive Director of U.S., Inc., to be our guest speaker. The program will be an introduction to the Petoskey-based Immigration Think-Tank.
LAST WEEK
Our thanks to Petoskey Downtown Coordinator, Becky Goodman, for the interesting and informative program at last week's meeting. Becky covered all the bases, telling us about "new" businesses in town, as well as about the many events planned during the rest of this year. Our thanks also to Mike McNamara for arranging the program and to Rick Neumann for introducing the speaker.
ONE DOWN - ONE TO GO!
Thanks to Chris Cerrudo, Julie Witthoeft, Pat McGinn, and Bob Esford, the first of our two inter-club visits for the month of July has been completed. These four traveled to Charlevoix last Tues-day to visit the Kiwanis Club of Charlevoix. Next up: Inter-club Chairman Hugh Winnell, and a merry band of inter-clubbers, are checking the snow-depth in the Upper Peninsula today (July 15th) with an inter-club visit to the Kiwanis Club of Newberry. The "merry band..." includes Brad Foster, Hank Hoffman, and Elson Carmein.
CAMPAIGN '10
Travelogue tabloid advertising chairperson Jan Jensen handed out Tabloid Sales Kits at last week's meeting. And, she still has seven kits left! Salespersons are being asked to make call-back visits to advertisers in last year's tabloid. Obviously, the more sales people we have, the fewer calls each has to make. The Sales Team so far consists of Jan, Rick Neumann, Hugh Winnell, Bob Esford, DJ, and Dave Meyer. Calls need to be made A.S.A.P. We should wind up this phase of the project not later than mid-August.
A NEW MAJOR EMPHASIS
The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus will eliminate MNT, a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. In partnership with UNICEF, we are targeting the poorest, most underserved women and children in the world, and paving the way for other interventions that will boost maternal health and child survival. Hand-in-hand, Kiwanis and UNICEF will once again change the world.
Kiwanis successfully completed its first global campaign for children by virtually eliminating iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). Kiwanis raised more than US$100 million, which today is at work in more than 103 nations. The number of households estimated to be consuming iodized salt has jumped from 20 percent in 1990 to more than 70 percent, and the effort has been heralded as one of the most successful health initiatives in the world. The announcement was made at the Las Vegas Convention.
WHAT'S NEXT?
President Designate Jim Ehrnst and President-Elect Designate Marion Kuebler completed their Club Leadership Education last Saturday and are anxious to get started on a new Kiwanis Year. The first item on their agenda is going to be the appointing of Committee Chairs and the lining up of weekly Program Chairs for the year. These assignments should be completed by mid-August to allow time for "proper training" of Committee Chairs. Jim will want to schedule his President's Leadership Conference to meet with his Board and Committee Chairs in early September. This meeting will line up the goals and objectives for the coming year.
