Volume 88, No. 52 October 5, 2010
FAREWELL ...
Thus begins my final issue of Kiwanis News & Views. In some respects, it seems like only yesterday that I edited my first WEEKLY BULLETIN, as it was known at that time. July 14, 1968, was the date of that first issue and I spent a couple of hours this morning, going through some of the old issues, remembering the names of some of the Kiwanians who have gone before us and some of the projects that our club has taken on over the years. As I leave the position of Editor of this publication, I offer my sin-cere thanks to those who have cooperated in helping bring this publication to you each week; and, to those who have taken the time to offer constructive criticism which hopefully improved my efforts. My hope for the future is that you continue to get in-formation to the Bulletin Editor, Julie Witthoeft, in a timely fashion.
INSTALLATION BANQUET
The Officers and Directors of our two Kiwanis clubs were installed by Lt. Gov. Dave Garland during last evening's Installation Banquet. Prior to the actual "installation", those present attended a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Little Traverse Bay. The "program" for the meeting (for those of us near the windows) was a demonstration by the Petoskey Speedskating Club as they prepared for this winter's competition. Following the close of that meeting, our regular meeting of the week featured the retirement of last year's officers and the installing of new officers to take their places. Now its time to join these new officers in making their years the best ever!
A MESSAGE FROM MARION
As Membership Chair, I am making a request for a commitment to making our weekly Tuesday meeting. Let's start off Jim's year as President with a full house on Tuesday, October 5th. Working together as an "active" club, we will make reaching our goals pos-sible and show our community what we are all about. Thanks for all your efforts!!!
THIS WEEK - October 5th
Our program chair is Brad Foster. He's invited Mark S. Gray, Chief Infor-mation Officer at Northern MI Region-al Hospital, to be our speaker. Gray will speak on "The Journey To Our Electronic Health Record" and how it affects health care for you and your family.
AND THE, ON October 12th ...
President Jim Ehrnst will deliver the annual "State of the Club" address. This meeting will give Jim the chance to outline his goals and aspirations for his year as our President. Jim will also introduce his "team" of Committee Chairs.
BOARD MEETING
The first meeting of the our Board of Directors for this year will take place on Thursday, October 7th. The meet-ing will again be held in the conference room of the Petoskey News-Review on State St.. Being the first meeting of the new year, the Agenda will be full! In addition to the "regular" items, the Board will ratify the appointment of our new Secretary; elect Senior Mem-bers and Honorary Members for the next 12 months; adopt Budgets for both the Administrative Account as well as the Service Project Account; and appointment of an Audit Commit-tee.
INTER-CLUB REPORT
The final inter-clubs of 2009-10 and the completion of a Round Robin have been accomplished. On Thursday, Sept. 16th, Hank Hoffman, Hugh Win-nell, Elson Carmein, and Brad Foster completed a visit to the Kiwanis Club of Rogers City. This was followed on Monday, Sept. 27th with a visit to the Indian River club by Rick Neumann, Kim Jones, Brad Foster, and Bob Esford. Hugh has agreed to continue as Inter-club Chairman for another year so get ready to sign-up for more great inter-club visits.
TRAVELOGUE PROGRAM
The second program in this year's Travel & Adventure Series is coming up. On Thursday, October 28th, we will take "A Canal Adventure in En-gland, Scotland & Wales" with our guide, Fran Reidelberger. Curtain time will be 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School Auditorium. Kiwanis members are needed to handle tickets and get-ting our patrons seated; operating the lights; running the projector; and, introducing the speaker. A sign-up sheet will be circulating at our meeting.
OUR NEWEST MEMBER
Shake hands with our newest member - Michael J. "Mike" Atchison. Mike is the co-owner of Atchison Paper and Supply. He and his wife, Catherine, live on Hoffman St. The "dynamic duo" (D.J. & Dave Farley) are Mike's sponsors.
FROM THE PAST ...
... here's a little ditty I found while going through "old" bulletins - Some Kiwanians are like wheelbarrows - no good unless pushed. Some are like trailers - they have to be pulled; some are like kites, if you don't keep a string on them, they fly away. Some are like balloons - full of wind and ready to blow up. Some are like footballs - you can't tell which way they will bounce. And then, some are like a fine watch - open face, pure gold, quietly busy and full of good works.

TO PROMOTE the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
TO DEVELOP, by precept and ex-ample, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
TO PROVIDE through Kiwanis Clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
TO CO-OPERATE in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness justice, patriotism and good will.
